Now, if your psi-techs' range is short (that is, they can't
observe the invaders from long distance), pick a few of them who
are good actors, and have them wander around the abandoned areas
giving a good imitation of refugees from _Call of Chthulhu_ who
have failed their SAN roll. This should at least give the
invaders pause, and delay their assault on the handwavium beds
till you can figure out what to do in the long term. And it'll
be a way for your psi-techs to observe them, and (using repeater
psi links or whatever) to keep their fellows informed.
Hmm thanks, scattering to the hills was my plan A so that they avoided
being totalled from the air without being able to defend themselves. I'm
not sure about the playacting but there's another plot thread that I
might be able to work into this... they could pretend to be sick... as
in _plague_.
Oh yes. If some of those other good actors could put out a
convenient broadcast from ground to the approaching ships,
coughing and wheezing and/or disappearing from the viewscreen in
mid-choke ... Murray Leinster's Med Ship stories did all kinds
of variations on that theme, both when there was a real plague
and when there wasn't.
