Re: Word formatting help please

I'm not an MS Word user by choice, (prefer Lotus), but I'm trying to get used to Word.. only it's done something in autoformat or autocorrect that I can't get rid of and I can't find anything in the help files because I don't know what to call it.

I've been using three asterisks as scene breaks
***
Like so.

And I was a bit heavy handed and typed in more **** than I meant to. When I hit _enter_ to break the line Word substituted a full row of square dots and I can't delete them. Whether my cursor is in front of the line of dots or after it either delete or backspace just goes to the next character after or before and moves the line of dots down to below the next line.

What the chuff has Word done and how do I get rid of it? I have two of these blasted dotty-line things sitting in the middle of my WIR.

And how do I stop it from happening again? I already have everything switched off in the auto-format except for ordinals (1st), fractions (1/2) and replacing -- with an em-dash.

Help, please, all you Word gurus out there.

You are seeing Word's Auto Format Option: Create Border Lines

On recent versions of Word (I'm looking at 2007) immediately after it happens you will see a little lightening bolt. If you hover over it there will be a down carat leading to some choices. First option is to Undo. Second Option is to Stop Automatically Creating Border Lines. Third option takes you into the Auto Correct Dialog Box where you can set a number of autoformat options.

Or, simply use Contol-Z to undo it as you type.
