I'm not sure that I've ever had instruction in writing. I think even
in school I was largely left to get on with it. Thinking back, I was
rarely asked to modify anything but spelling and punctuation. I did
get a lot of positive feedback though. My writing was praised so I
grew up thinking that creative writing was easy and that I was good at
it.
The critical skills I developed doing Eng Lit I have had to largely
unlearn.
l can only conclude that I have learned by reading books by other
people and writing myself. It has taken me an embarassingly long time
to realise that my writing could be improved, not because I thought it
was already wonderful, but because I'm not sure I ever regarded it as
a skill to be practised so much as a talent you just had or didn't
have - like a knack for mental arithmetic ( which I've never
possessed.) I was rather late coming to the notion of improvement
through conscious effort and I still struggle. I have a child's
attitude to writing I like it to be fun, I don't like doing
corrections and I want a gold star at the end.
