A side-issue, but I have this problem too.
I can't decide whether it means I'm going senile, or whether it is a
consequence of so much incorrect spelling on the Internet.
I've been afraid my brain cells have been dying, but I think I read
somewhere that hormonal changes can affect certain mental processes,
ie math, spelling, and as a major hormone shift, menopause, which I've
started, can produce such annoyances. Of course, that isn't likely
your problem, but I do like blaming it on lower estrogen. But I do
think it can be related to aging and one reason I still do most math
with pen and paper (I've never been able to do it in my head) and not
a calculator, so I can keep my "math cells" in practice.
Then again, seeing so much incorrect spelling online might be
reprogramming us. ;)
When I were a lad, 'twas only books I read. And they generally had words
spelled correctly. Nowadays, I reed morr wurdz on the web, and chancies
our their spelt inkorecktly, halve the tyme.
lol
Did you see the exercise that was making the rounds last year
sometime? There was a paragraph with missing letters and some internet-
speak and apparently, most people had no problems reading and
understanding it. I, however, had no clue what most of the words
should be. I hear words in my head when I read and I need all the
letters to be there, except... If I'm the one making the
abbreviations, and they take a very set form. I rarely drop beginning
letters. And there are times I do use my abbreviations, only to forget
what they stand for later. One of my friends/collaborators uses wch
when editing. I actually had to ask her what it stood for: which.
