I partially concur-- a structured background always distracts a little,
and a too-structured background distracts so much that the text may be
impossible to read.

I think you are talking about textured backgrounds, and Catja is talking
about having things arranged in squares or tables with frames around
them and things like that?

I find too much flat color uncomfortable to look at -- it wearies the
eye. I can put a subtle texture on it, or I can break it up, or both.
I confess that for my own pages I have usually aimed for both. I'm not
the most understated person in the world.

I have no problem with the kind of textures you have on the background of your website. They are as close to plain as makes no difference. It the big swirls and the multi-coloured textural backgrounds I have a problem with.
