My daughter has to do a report for school and has chosen cloning for
her subject. It's this dog-awful huge production with multi-media,

about cloning showing a progression of how people have thought about
the issue over time instead of boring power-point graphs .
Off the top of my head I can think of two authors... Bujold, probably
the quote about cloning being the sin of vanity if I can find it back
(Mark talking to Ellie Quinn?)... and David Feintuch (dang, I google
and find out he's passed) because I seem to remember a quote about,
even though cloning is really *really* illegal that a child (the
clone) ought not be held accountable for the sins of his father.
Knowing which book to look in for that would be fabulous.

What I've always found fascinating about the use of cloning in SF is the
various symbolic understandings of clones that are independent of (and
in some cases contrary to) the biological facts. The most common ones
that come to mind are "clone as mystic twin-self" (i.e., your clone will
somehow _be_ you in a way that even an identical twin isn't); "clone as
subordinate bodypart" (i.e., your clone is legally/ethically an
extension of your own body and can be used as a source of spare parts up
to and including personality transplants); "clone as manufactured
product" (combining the motifs of mass production and of non-personhood,
hence clone armies, clone workforces, etc.). Some of these motifs even
show up in real life, such as the companies that promise to clone your
deceased pet, which clearly play off the "clone as mystic twin-self"
motif.
