In article <pagemail-01A3D2.15095016102007@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>,I have a friend who 'dowses' for food she's likely to be allergic to. Holding the food in one hand she uses a pendulum to ascertain whether she can safely eat it or not.

What can I say? I've not seen this talent in action myself. I can
say that my friend pretty much shrugs the whole thing off as of
small significance. She seems to regard success at dowsing very
casually -- she thinks it's just a vibrational hyper-sensitivity of
some kind that a small % of people have in more than normal
amounts, and it can be used to find water with more than usual
success. No prayers, rituals, or other mystical doo-wop is
involved.
Just "vibrations"...
To be honest, I can imagine that there are possible physical or
geographical cues that could underpin successful dowsing efforts; if
you can see the surface of the land, it may be that the presence of
underground water is sometimes reflected thereon in some obscure
fashion. Dowsing is more plausible to me than certain other alleged
powers. But I remain decidedly skeptical on the issue.

She figures that her body probably already knows the answer, maybe from skin contact, she just needs a way transferring the information to her brain.
Though when she does it with stuff still in a can it freaks me out... But she isn't dead yet.
