The beam is "modulated", but I can't find an explanation for what that
means. I'm fairly certain it isn't a simple on/off, though. It's most
likely a variation in strength or some other attribute.
There are three kinds of modulation you can apply to a wave to encode
information - amplitude, frequency and phase.
Four. Amplitude, frequency, phase, and polarization. Phase is how far the
waves are shifted from some reference wave. Polarization is what direction
the waves are oscillating in.
Indeed so, and I really should have remembered polarization
modulation, given the importance to quantum cryptography...
