But only because the customers didn't think the superior quality was worth the higher price.

Both you and someone who commented on the situation in England seem to regard people having the opportunity to make that tradeoff as a bug. It looks to me like a feature.

Better milk, both in taste and quality, but impossible to mass produce.

If you want it, you can get it here. In stores. Our local health-food store has all sorts of milk. Including milk not from cows, which to me is madness.

The U.S. allowed economies of scale to destroy our small breweries, until it just wasn't possible to buy really high quality beer here. Once the small breweries were a thing of the past, the price of mass produced beer had no competitive barrier. Now, Budweiser costs nearly as much as local brews did once, so the economy of scale no longer operates in our favor, and bad beer is the only beer.

All beer is bad beer. But setting that aside, if you want your darker-colored alternative rotted-grain beverages, the small breweries are not a thing of the past. There are hundreds of "microbrews" available all over the country, and easily obtainable.

My wife happens to be partial to Harpoon's various brews, mostly available in the Northeast, but she's found beers she likes in every place we have visited so far.
