Around here the black-and-yellow ones ("yellow jackets") are reasonably
decent armed citizens :-) It's the red ones, actually brick-red with
almost-black abdomens, that you have to watch out for. We also have an
extensive selection of mud daubers. I believe they're capable of
stinging, but I don't know anyone who's had the experience.

Here, too, the red wasp is viewed with some degree of caution - but if
I were forced to choose, I would designate the little yellow and black
varmints we call 'sugar bees*' as most bothersome. They resemble
smaller, plumper yellow-jackets, but mostly hang around camp sites and
picnic areas, making life miserable for vacationers trying to enjoy
their out-of-doors meal. They make sipping out of a soda can an
adventure that can prove painful.

Give them their own full-sugar soda can some feet away and they'll
gather over there. Sciplus has something to trap them inside soda
bottles -- http://www.sciplus.com and put 92723 into the item number
search.

The website goes under my 'WTF and ain't the internet wonderful'
bookmark. ;-)

The little critters do love their sweets, but from what I've seen, a
sweet drink will only thin them down, not attract all of them away.
There's always one or two that are on a mission from their bug-diety
to harrass people.

Around here it's the custom to have several of the "koozy" things,
sleeves of foam that go over a drink can. If you must go away and leave
your soda (or beer), put the koozy over the can upside down and no
flying insect can get in. Fire ants are more persistent, unfortunately.

Ric
