The final paragraph above is the plot device I'm asking about. Someone

now decide he actually believes?
From his description, which is very brief, I'm assuming Helgi is a
good person. If he is, he's going to be in a moral dilemma. His
homeland has used him badly, but for what he would have, at that time,
considered a good purpose. He was pretty much a friend of Eric
anyway, so the Spell just intensified it. On that, I think he'll stay
with a lot of the intensity, as there's no moral or logical reason to
fight it.
We're not sure how good he is, or whether his homeland has used him
badly (or, as it might be, that he has chosen to allow his homeland to
use him badly).
It was not stated whether Helgi consented to the casting of the spell.
If he did, it seems he is in the position of an agent of Esland who is
considering becoming a double agent.
If he didn't, I suppose he can regard himself as having a morally
unconstrained choice after the point at which the spell comes off; i.e.
he is not currently under a special obligation to either side, other
than whatever obligations would apply if he were not previously
involved in the situation.
How much of a distinction exists between the above is arguable, I
suppose.
