So at this point
Helgi has to decide whether or not the lie is now truth--whether he
really is loyal to Eric now that the spell making him think he is has
vanished.

The final paragraph above is the plot device I'm asking about. Someone
who believes X had been enchanted into thinking he believes Y, a good
deal of time passes and then the enchantment is removed. Which does he
now decide he actually believes?

I don't know how unique a plot device that is but it's a nice one.
I'm assuming
other stuff is going on and this is one conflict among others.

Yes.

Forstmark ruler vs Eric and his mother--his guests/prisoners.

Forstmark ruler vs Forstmark Guild. No doubt some other nobles who would
like to be the ruler--it's more like a Greek tyrant than a hereditary
monarchy.

Probably one faction in the Guild vs another faction.

Eric vs Esland King (his great uncle). It isn't clear, if the King
discovers Eric running around in his kingdom, whether the King will have
Eric's head cut off, have him imprisoned, or simply welcome him back
into the family.

Esland King's brother and heir vs said prince's wife--major secondary
characters in Salamander. There is no way Mari is going to turn a twelve
year old boy over to the King if she thinks the King will cut his head
off; Prince Kieran might share the sentiment but has much stronger
feelings of obligation to his brother. And Mari, before they got
married, made it entirely explicit that she would continue to act on her
own judgement, whether or not it agreed with her husband's. And Mari's
stepson is going to end up best friends with his cousin Eric, hence on
Mari's side not his father's.

Traditionalist faculty members of the Esland Mage College vs Coelus and
Ellen (protagonists of _Salamander_) and Ellen's mother Melia, over the
role of women in the College. Women students have only been permitted
for the past few years--but Ellen was pretty clearly the best student
they've had for many years. She is now married to Coelus, their
brilliant young theorist, who thinks it's obvious that they ought to
have women on the faculty (for several reasons). Healing magic is almost
entirely done by women, Melia is a very talented healer, and there is
nobody on the faculty capable of teaching the subject.

I'm sure I've left out one or two.

....

Thanks.
