I may resort to reading the recipe book that came with it again: there
may be something I'm not remembering. Trouble is, it gives measurements
in *cups*. WTF is a *cup*?? Could be anything from 1/4 pint to 2/3 pint,
judging from the cups/mugs I've got. (I've got a one pint mug for in
case of serious coffee starvation, too, but I'm fairly sure they would
have said pints if they meant pints.)

I'd prefer to weigh out the flour anyway, rather than use fluid
measures, if I have to measure it.

Note that I have the same reaction to "weigh out the flour" that you do to "cups". WTF am I supposed to do, go to the bathroom (the only location of the house that MIGHT have a set of scales) and hope it's accurate enough for making food?

Unh, no, there ARE kitchen scales...

They are about as common here as American measuring cups are in Europe. If that.

Um, I live in the States. Many of my recipes are European, ancient,
derived from Grandma and such - and require weight for ingredients
rather than cups. I found a kitchen scale in a random kitchen store,
no problem - this one is even co-graduated in ounces and grammes,
which is even better for me. But I had no problem whatsoever finding
one.

I didn't say they were hard to find. I'm sure that a good cooking store in Europe would have American measuring cups, too.

I said they were not common, and they are not. Our family does quite a bit of cooking, and we don't have scales, and as far as I know only one family of my immediate acquaintance DOES -- and I'm not sure I've ever seen them use the things.
