I've come to the conclusion that it's never going to happen
unless I get it pre-installed. I shouldn't mind having a
backup laptop anyway, especially for travel: my current
machine is a desktop replacement with a 17" screen. System
76 looks very nice, especially the Serval, and is supposed
to have excellent support, but Dell is noticeably cheaper.

The latest versions of Ubuntu are extremely easy to
install. I just installed it on a laptop last week, and everything
went without a hitch. It recognized the wifi card automagically,
and everything Just Worked. Dell also sells systems with Ubuntu
preinstalled these days.
