The Antique had a table to himself under the Dome. He could afford it,
and he didn't have either partnership or household.
Makes me think we're talking about an antiques dealer. Am wondering what the
Dome is, but can put off finding out for a while without being annoyed.
He also didn't have much business. He was drinking tea and reading the
table when he heard someone clear his throat.
You have me intrigued about 'reading the table'. Assuming that this is not a
throwaway, I'll be wanting to know what sort of thing he's reading and why
it's printed (?) on a table, and if perhaps my initial idea that the table
he has to himself is for selling things is wrong or not.
Correction -- her throat.
The Antique looked her over. Hair and eyes black, skin pale (and
currently a bit sunburned). Stood as if she was used to being
uncommonly tall (he was poor at estimating height, and couldn't
remember what was normal for women this decade.) Age probably
mid-twenties.
I like the pro-dropping style. Makes it seem more like someone's
thoughts/observations, rather than a narrative exposition.
Also, I'm now wondering if 'The Antique' may refer to the man's age, rather
than or in addition to his business. Actually, I'm pretty sure that it does,
which just leaves open the question of whether or not he is also an antique
dealer, and if not, what business is it that he doesn't have much of?
"Tom Sweet? I'm Jeanette Vang Winkler, and I'd like to talk about us
working together."
I would keep reading.
