Nah, that was me; Tina was responding.

Standard tack here, with fairly heavy Western saddles, includes a cinch
which goes around the horse's rib cage and a belly band which goes farther
back. The belly band is kept loose except when it's going to be needed for
traversing rough terrain because it's uncomfortable for the horse. Joyce
and Jacey, who know a lot more about the technical details than I do, have
different names for it.

I know absolutely nothing about Western tack and Western style riding other than what I've seen in movies and read about, but I'm more or less OK on English style, though I may be out of date with some more modern innovations such as new materials for bits etc. as It's 25 years since I rode regularly and probably close on 20 years since I was last in the saddle, but the 20 years before that were pretty horsy years for me.
