My GI doctor wants me to take this stuff not so much to counteract
symptoms as to keep the inflammation down. He made it clear to me
that, symptoms or no, I should continue taking it every day. He
compared it to aspirin for people with suspected heart conditions.
If you don't mind my asking--CD or UC?
If CD means Crohn's, that's the one.
Thought so, from your description of the condition but wasn't sure as
ulcerative colitis can present in a similar manner. My son has
Crohn's.
That being said, it's been described as about the mildest case one could
possibly imagine. One teensy tinsy spot along the whole colon. They
found granuloma, though, which as far as I can tell is the only actually
definitive way to diagnose it.
Unless it presents as my son's did--with three huge fistulas in a
tender part of his anatomy. They did the colonoscopy/endoscopy and
found granulomas in the stomach and in the terminal ileium as well.
In the middle of the flareup, just after I'd been diagnosed, I took
exception with my doctor at the idea that I had a "mild" case. After
she described what severe cases were like, I had to give in. And be
thankful.
My son's case is moderate. Would be mild except for the severity of
the initial fistulas. He's on Remicade and 6-MP. Originally he tried
Asacol, but it didn't work. Thankfully, the Remicade keeps it at bay.
I've been to support group meetings and heard about the truly awful
cases. Glad to hear you've got a relatively mild one!
