People like some assurance that they're getting something they're
going to like.

I feel the opposite way. I stopped reading SF for many years, mainly
because everything was a series. I wanted a story that had a satisfying
beginning, middle, and end. If I want to make sure I'm making a good
investment of time, I'll look for an author I know I like, or one who's
been recommended to me. To find out about new authors, one option is
to check out books from the library. If I don't like it after the first
10-20 pages, I just return the book.
