Darkhawk (H. Nicoll):
(Please excuse my vehemence; this is a long-standing
tweak. "Lifestyle" means "manner of living"; the fact
of having more than one partner coveys no actual
information about how one actually lives.
I rather think it does.
Further,
"lifestyle" is frequently used in political speech to
evoke negative stereotypes of irresponsible behaviour
and/or suggest that some people's families are no more
substantial than a fashion statement and thus that it
would do no harm to destroy them.)
Googling for "lifestyle" I see no examples of such
usage. Perhaps you can suggests a suitable google.
Rather, this looks to me like euphemism exhaustion - we
go through words referring to certain things, such as
water closets, at an alarming rate. Pleasant sounding
words acquire negative connotations and become insults,
like "gay", not because of the character of the word,
but because of the character of the thing referred to.
On the previous euphemism becoming an insult, a new word
is target for destruction. While "gay" has indeed
become an insult, requiring a replacement term, I am
unaware of any similar phenomenon for "lifestyle".
