Re: What kind of sets are there?

Do they talk about sets, like "clubs, spades, hearts, diamonds"? (I
thought of that while playing one of the solitaire card games
collection I've got here. Kind of obvious, but that just shows how I
completely fail to come up with even the most obvious 'sets'.)

I wouldn't know what to search for. But just for curiosity, how big
is the traffic there? (Posts per day. I've got no internet at
present, so I can't go to google and have a look. Ever since I ended
up downloading megabytes of _packed_ - with zip or something -
messages, I'm shy to order them blind.)

Traffic there is about what it is here, give/take. As for sets like
are being discussed here, you'd have to specifically ask the question
(and provide examples), but I doubt it'd be off-topic if you worded it
correctly. And doesn't your library have Internet access for its
patrons to use? That'd be one solution to your problem.

I am doubtful of whether real world mythology would be any help,
though. From what I know, they've got systems of the same kind as
Jonathan suggested, focussing on traits. Results rather than causes.

It's chaotic, resulting from what people observed and looking for
reasons, rather than a frame that has consequences, designing the
results in an ordered manner. (Whatever the people in this setting
believe may be another matter, but for me, as writer, I need to know
what's behind it before I can know what the people might make up as
explanation.) Take for a tiny example the moon as left eye and the
sun as right eye of Horus. WTF? That is uneven! :)

(Indirectly related question that keeps bugging me: Where do gods
come from? I need something that isn't native to the world.)

(snip)

Something divine should be divine, but it has to come from
somewhere.

In the meantime I've thought of another related question: Is there
some weird physical force/theory/whatever that I could grab and
warp? Like Chaos and Order being actual entities, or some such? (I
believe that's already done, it's just an example.)

Since others have provided you with lists of sets, I can take a
(modest) stab at 'where do gods come from'. :) IF I'm understanding
your question correctly, it sounds like you need to hit the philosiphy/
religion and science sections of your local library/bookstore and
browse there instead of just the mythology sections. Perhaps the
(Bhuddist?) idea of all the various gods being the refections of a
single being (with all the various seperate dieties being the main
god's way of communicating its ideas in a way it thinks humans will
understand best) can be a useful idea for you. Or maybe the origins
of this character might spark some ideas for you:

You'll have to scroll down to get to the summaries of this character's
origins, and further down for a brief discussion of them, but perhaps
something like this will give you an idea or two. Just remember to
file off the serial numbers if you use it, though. :)
