The German word, literally translated, for pencil is leadpen, too.
At least one usage (Zeiss, Jena) has "Stift" as "pin" in the
engineering or map-tack sense, a (generally long thin) object used to
fix two things in relationship to one another.
If you want to split hairs, when we're clearly talking about pens,
then Stift also means apprentice. But that, too, doesn't have
anything to do with Bleistift literally meaning leadpen.
This was/is a common means of making precise adjustments permanent
-- once the adjustment was made, drill hole(s) and drive steel
pin(s) through -- or to make, e.g., the attachment of a gear to a
shaft reliable. By extension the verb form was/is used to mean
"fix, permanently attach" using any means: "mit Lack bestiftet".
What kind of paint has the shape of a pin?
