I've also, more commonly, met perfectly normal women who seem to

I'm going to take a wild guess here, based chiefly on
having been female all my life ....

The woman who assumes that she is unattractive thinks
that because Fred, or George, or whoever it is, doesn't
happen to be attracted to her. Never mind that any
number of other guys are going around murmuring, in the
words of the madrigal, "Why don't I have a flea like
that in my bed?", if Fred or George or whoever she's
interested in isn't interested in her, if she isn't
attractive to him, then she isn't attractive _tout
court_.

I spent my late teens and virtually all my twenties
being completely ignored by all the guys I found
interesting, and pursued by a string of people whom I
described at the time as "the mad mathematician, the mad
photographer," et cetera, and who even in several
decades' hindsight still come across as being two or
three cards short of a full deck.

Although now I can look at photos and say, objectively,
yeah, I wasn't so bad, I assumed at the time that I was
unattractive except to the marginally insane, which was
functionally unattractive _tout court_.
