OK, I was blinded by there being no other posts with the original title,
so I couldn't see the threading, as there was nothing for it to thread
to--if you see what I mean.

I change the subject line so that people can kill file it.
That is, if I *remember* I change the subject line.

Should I leave the old subject line in as well, "Newcomer's FAQ, was:
yaddayadda"?

Yes.

I've never tried to read newsgroups with anything that doesn't
do proper threading, so I'm not really sure what is
problematical, and what is not.

I use a newsgroup that does proper threading, but I have it set
to start a new thread when the subject line changes. Like Joann,
I saw what appeared to be a new thread until I looked at the
first post and saw that it quoted another. I didn't both to
check the References header to see whether it really was a new
thread, or whether it was technically still part of the old one.

It's a completely new thread, but it was posted multiply and in many
places, so your ISP probably killed the original post.

No, it did not. I saw the original post. As I said, I have
Dialog set to start a new thread when the Subject header
changes. Michelle changed the Subject header, so her post
appeared as if it were the first post in a new thread. Had
I checked headers and clicked on the last (and only)
Message-ID in the References header, Dialog would in fact
have taken me to the post to which she was replying, since
I'd downloaded it a day earlier.

Oh, sorry, I didn't even notice she changed. I have them stay in
original thread. I thought you meant this was still Daniel's thread,
instead of the guy who wanted us to get him on Oprah.
