If I have a character say "That car needs washed," (a
construction I understand to be used in southern NZ
English, and quite likely elsewhere though not in my own
dialect)

I know first-hand that it's common in western Pennsylvania,
and I've read that it's common in central Pennsylvania as
well. It's not uncommon in parts of Ohio. Oh, and I
understand that it's general in Scottish Standard English.

Probably came into Western Pennsylvania usage from Scots and/or Ulster
Scots. I've read that it came from Gaelic.

It is by now lost in the mists of time whether it was a matter of
common usage in Bluegrass Kentucky or if I picked it up from my
(sometimes) W. Penn. husband. Either way, I say--and sometimes
write--it.
