My character is describing a public bath for whalers. He comes from a racist
society but is not actively racist himself, so he says something like 'They
went in blacks and came out -' what?
If it were our world, he might say they came out Christians, but his
universe has no dominant religion. And he won't say 'gentlemen,' because he
is a gentleman and knows no whaler would ever rate.
In the context 'Christian' is a nationalistic rather than religious
expression; people belonging to the country. Blacks in western
societies are often - perhaps mostly - Christian, after all. Consider
also the example of Spain c. 1500. So I'd look for whatever word the
people of his country would apply to honest co-patriots.
