There's an annual essay competition at the School of Engineering at my
local university, to encourage the concept that engineers ought to have
a certain amount of communication ability. Some years it's had to be
cancelled due to lack of interest. This year it had about 15 entries,
of, um, varying abilities to communicate.

My experience was that engineers communicate just fine. Essays
aren't the preffered mode, though.

Engineering Days at the University of Alberta used to involve a spoof
newspaper put out by the engineers. The writing was fine, but the paper's
content often caused the University to send people around to remove it from
wherever the engineers had put it, and disinfect the surrounding area.

Yup, that's engineers for you. Their overriding sense of
practicality often overshadows others' sense of propriety.

Cf. the Cal Engineer's "Stress Analysis of a Strapless Evening
Gown."
