There's an annual essay competition at the School of Engineering at my
local university, to encourage the concept that engineers ought to have
a certain amount of communication ability. Some years it's had to be
cancelled due to lack of interest. This year it had about 15 entries,
of, um, varying abilities to communicate.

My experience was that engineers communicate just fine. Essays
aren't the preffered mode, though.

I could quite easily be convinced that engineers communicate just fine
among themselves. But there are certain differences in communication
mode between engineers and, say, librarians, that lead to a great deal
of stress and hair-pulling among library management here, not to mention
the occasional story which is extremely amusing for those of us who
aren't management and therefore don't have to worry about it.
