There's an annual essay competition at the School of Engineering at my
local university, to encourage the concept that engineers ought to have
a certain amount of communication ability. Some years it's had to be
cancelled due to lack of interest. This year it had about 15 entries,
of, um, varying abilities to communicate.

My experience was that engineers communicate just fine. Essays
aren't the preffered mode, though.

Nah. I sometimes spend a week bashing out a few thousand words on what is
euphemistically called an 'investment proposal' but basically translates
as 'ooh, shiny, WANT!'

I rather doubt the English Dept. would view that document as an
essay.
