Seeking inspiration.

Basic thought: If you travel around with a panther, there should be some
use to it.
3 books later, there still is no idea coming forth where the panther
might actually be useful on that trip.
Allright, there was an opportunity where it could have been getting some
action, but I don't like action, so the plot went around that. But just
tagging along as a prestige object as well as sort of additional
bodyguard that's never needed, seems off.
Here's the tedious details:
Setting: Sort-of (really just sort-of [*]) medival country. The spirit
is more or less medival, with nobles and kings and garbage piling up in
the alleys. The technology isn't 'quite'. There's magic, but seen as
wicked, along with anyone who's seen using it (the effects) getting
locked up and killed in some ghastly way. (If not rescued. Some people
secretly use magic. It doesn't involve ingredients, spells, gestures, or
other traditional handling; all it needs is a conscious thought.)
Situation: Some evil overlord abducted 2 women and dumped them in said
country (he thinks it amusing[+]). 3 guys, and the panther, travel
around drawing as much attention as they can to find them (or be found
by one of them for all the attention they try to draw), visiting the
nobles (where the other is expected to be somewhere); a guy who pretends
to be some rich guy from a different country looking for a bride; no
fighter but charming, his boyfriend^Wbodyguard; knows how to fight, and
some sort of crazy-currently-stable genius who knows a lot about even
the technology that isn't permitted[#]. They all know magic well, and
with the exception of the bodyguard, can use it in that country, too.
The cat's larger than what you find here and still young. It also obeys
some commands, though no one knows why. It's the only one these guys
have ever encountered, though the crazy guy has at least seen ours (real
world ones).
Someone powerful is watching over them most of the time, providing
continuous protection and to step in in an emergency, but there's one
city where the bodyguard eventually goes alone with the panther,
unprotected, where using magic would just blow up whoever does so,
including the powerful guy so he can't help or even watch there. (That's
where I decided to evade the action.)
[*] They've got castles, swords, guns, hydro-plants, public phones,
water from wells only, electric light and heating, know about primitive
planes but aren't allowed to use them, horse-drawn carts, bicycles,...
You get the idea.
[+] He'll just watch until they're found. Well, he did watch. The actual
trek is finished, I just want to insert the panther being useful on that
trip.
[#] Everything that was known here up to the nineties, in some secret
lab or openly, or just existing in a sci-fi story.
