I am sure that someone said that the /purpose/ of dating is sex

You're wrong.

Someone did say that, but only in reference to someone else's purported
belief. Nicky is the one who said it, in the context of David H. being the
'kind of person' who believed that 'the purpose of dating is sex'. She coined
the phrase in this discussion and applied the belief therein to David H.

This was in the context of a discussion of a definition of dating found on
wikipedia by David F, which includes the following "the purpose of a date is
for the people dating to become acquainted and decide whether they want to
have a relationship".

When David H. said "That's the definition" in response to her post, he was
not, as I read it at the time or now, agreeing with the definition _she_
supplied, he was referring in exasperation to the the wikipedia definition,
which supplies that dating in Western societies generally has _something_ to
do with courtship and sex.

The only question lies in what was the antecedent of "That" in David H.'s
response to Nicky, and I am more than willing to let him clarify his
antecedent hiimself, as he did in his next post. I am _not_ willing to tell
him what his antecedent was, or must have been, or whatever.

Nor am I willing to sit quietly by while others tell him what his antecedent
_really_ was.

Really, everybody. When someone clarifies an ambiguity in their posting here,
do they not still deserve that right, regardless of the topic? Especially
since the other interpretation of his antecedent is at odds with everything
else he has said on this topic?
