Sounds like you got further than I did. I skimmed the mundane part to see
if the fantasy part would be better, but it wasn't; worse, if anything. So
iirc I dropped it about two pages into the fantasy world.

Me too. It made me feel horrible when I was reading it. Life's too short
for that.

I can't remember much about it - its a long while since I read it, but
I liked it.
I also thought the GAP series was good too - particularly the first
one.
I don't mind unattractive characters, in fact I don't even remember
thinking Thomas was that unattractive. He isn't in comparison to Angus
Thermopyle ( or however it was spelled)

I liked the idea of extreme scepticism and the connection with the
healing of the land
but that's all I remember.

I don't seem to do the like/don't like character thing either with my
own books or other
people's. My divide seems to be interesting/ not interesting and that's
more about
the way the character is written than anything else.

Incidentally 'We Need to talk about Kevin' has one of the nastiest
characters ever in it
and has been very successful. It is very well done but it isn't for the
faint hearted.
I admired it as a book and enjoyed reading it, while hating everyone in
it. ( It won the Orange prize)
