For me Gravity is best but it isn't very stable on my XP machine - I've no idea why. I have to keep uninstalling and reinstalling it. Haven't found anything to beat it, though.

What version? I'm at 2.50, build 2000, and have no problems w/ XP Pro.

Same one. Mind you, although I said it's unstable, it could be that it's *made* unstable. I've been thinking about it. Some programs just don't seem to be comfortable being run together. If I'm using MSN Messenger all sorts of things seem to become unreliable.

You may have something there. I don't touch MSN anything. Or Outlook.

I'm stuck with using some programs I'd rather not simply because other people just won't believe that it's just as ease - or easier and more reliable - to use programs that aren't 'just there' on their computer when they plug it in. I tried getting people to use another messenger program, but not a single one would. If I want to talk to my friends and family via messenger, I'm stuck with MSN. Which I also just had to uninstall and re-install. The thing crashes more often than a drunken dodgem driver.

http://gaim.sourceforge.net/ Gaim says it is compatible with MSN Messenger. Cannot verify that because I don't know anyone who uses that, but I know it works OK with AIM. Free, not from Microsoft, sounds like it might be worth a try.

Jim

I used Gaim when I was on a Linux system. It is 100% compatible with *everything* except the speech module of Goggle Talk, though it will take the g-mail jabber text protocol just fine. Never had a problem with it, except an annoying recalcitrance about enabling ICQ authorization requirement.

Now that I'm on a mac, I use Adium, which is remarkably similar.

Both are free and well-supported and I have accounts for AIM, G-mail, ICQ and MS Messenger. They all work fine.
