But the <grey> ~ <gray> business is a different story. The
word is from Old English <græ:g>, and a case can be made for
either spelling. There are only three current English words
derived from OE words ending in <-æ:g>: <key>, which is
irrelevant on account of its pronunciation, <whey>, and
<clay>. In addition there are <blay> ~ <bley>, <fey>, and
<wey>, from OE <-æ:ge>. Clearly <-ey> is the more common
spelling of words in these classes, but on the other hand,
<clay> is the only really common word here (again ignoring
the irrelevant <key>).

Ah. In my rant with the teacher I forgot fey, which would have been a good
one, because the method they use to teach reading here/now is crazy. In the
foreign language classes, the first thing they teach is phonics. Go figure.

I also forgot key as an exception, but I did think of 'lackey'. Relationship
to the above discussion?

(One WAG: an associate who is so lowly as not to possess a key to the shop:
"lack key") :-)
