The custom here is to quote the part of the message you're responding to
that is relevant to your reply. (Also to put your reply after the
quote, and to snip stuff that isn't relevant to your reply, as I've done
here.)
I see you're posting from Google Groups, which doesn't make it obvious
how to do this, but it is possible:
When you're looking at a message, instead of hitting "reply" at the
bottom of that message, hit "show options" at the top of it. Then hit
"reply" from the list of options that brings up, and it will give you
proper quoting and even attributions ("So-and-so wrote:").
The two main things are to leave the attributions in there, and to snip
anything you're quoting that isn't relevant to your reply.
