I prefer the term self promotion. ;p

What is this, buy-two-spammers-get-one-free week? Sheesh.

The amazing part is that both have stuck around long enough
to respond to posts.

And we should give 'em both credit for that. It's easy to make a mistake
and hard to set it straight. Give 'em a break - as long as they don't
make a habit of it. (Once they know the group - they won't do that
again.)

1- I made a post promoting my new novel.

Yes....and this is going to be the only critical part of my reply.
You did so without understanding the venue you were posting to.
This is a bad idea for two reasons. The first being the very things
discussed in this subthread, and very much mitigated by sticking
around. The second reason is that, by not doing your research, you
can generate negative publicity for your work. The lesson here is,
when doing self promotion, always do your reserach *first*.

2- My intention was not to offend anyone, it was 3a.m. and I had
originally planned to type more, but my eyes were closing and so I just
made it short and sweet.

The reason this group is hair-triggered on this issue is that it
gets what are felt to be far too many "drive by" self-promotions/spams.
That's why sticking around to take your lumps for it is an
extrememly postitve step. I think the only lesson here is, don't
post when you're dog-tired, but, then, we all make mistakes from
time to time.

3- I am not a spammer. Search every newsgroup and you will see a grand
total of, drum-roll please, thank you, two posts about my new novel.

Okay....but at the time of your intial post, we didn't know that.
These days, posting volume is so high that most people only really
read a few newsgroups. There just aren't enough hours in the day to
follow more than a few.

4- Everyone retract their claws and you just may like me. I'm really a
good guy, father of three, step-father to one, and expecting a fourth
child of my own.

I'll leave this one for the Malthusians...:-)

5.- I concede, I should have spent more time reading this group, but if
you refer to number two above, it was 3a.m. and I was just too tired at
that point. So I beg forgiveness, but beings I don't really know
anyone here, I hope you will understand, I am just proud of my
accomplishment and look at every means possible to promote my series.

I don't know how long you've been reading usenet (by the way, usenet
is *older* that the internet), but there is a phenomenon referred
to as the 'endless September'. The major symptom is people who jump
into newsgroups without having read them for a while (it used to be
that the recommendation was two weeks, though these days one can
just review a couple of weeks worth of posts in Google in a much
shorter period of time).

Fortuneately, forgivness is really easy to get. All you ahve to do
is apologize (which you've just done) and try to learn from your
mistakes, which I think you are doing too.

I would cousel against using *every* means to promote your books,
but rather, to do so selectively and appropriately. There have been
some recent threads here on good ways to do self promotion. You
will find them in the Google archives. What is appropriate here
is one line in a .sig file, and once you're establsihed in the
group, a simple announcement of a sale and/or publication.

All of this stuff in in the group FAQ, which has certainly been
mentioned recently.
