The RAF survival school used to be at Mountbatten, down in... Devon, I
think, maybe Cornwall. We were specifically told that the data used to
develop the immersion suit (densely woven cotton with rubber seals at
wrists and necks and a huge waterproof zip which discouraged needless
imbibing of liquids) came from lethal experiments. As my biology
teacher said once, it cost good men's lives so the data should not be
wasted.
To quote a poetic tribute to Wernher Von Braun penned by an
underground comix cartoonist of the Sixties named Dan O'Neill...
"He aimed for the stars... And hit London."
I was in the middle of a short story about the two stage variant (was
it A4? Nicknamed 'the ***' anyway) when Stephen Baxter had one
published in Interzone about the same subject*. Spooky or what?

*Mine, of course, would have been more realistic.
