There is another question: can general relativity be trusted to
identify all physical singularities as such?
Certainly if you apply general relativity and nothing else, the event
horizon can be considered a coordinate singularity. General relativity
has no objection to time and space dimensions switching roles, for
example.
But that does not constitute proof that time and space really *can*
switch roles. General relativity does not say the event horizon is a
physical singularity; but that does not constitute proof that the event
horizon is not a physical singularity. Other physics may have
something to say also.
