Well, it was when I was in high school (class of 62) and I liked her fine;
she was sort of a 'youth worker' at church, you know the sort, glamorous
and apparently high-status, to reassure girls that religion and glamor
could go together.... So outside her business I was in a position of
looking up to her for approval, as a role-model, a mentor.... But during
shopping, her manner shifted. Suddenly she wasn't acting quite the same,
she was being in a lower position, offering wares for my approval.... It
made me feel strange. What other people on this thread are saying about a
merchant being a 'servant' reminded me of that feeling. (Of course looking
back now, I'd say she was being ethical: careful to step out of the
personal relationship so as not to influence me unduly.)

Me too, now. But come to think of it, now, unless I know we'll get into a
good critical tech discussion about the merchandise, I'd tend to rather buy
from a stranger; with a friend, for me to ask too many questions, or reject
an item, would feel a little rude....
