In AI literature (temporal reasoning) there are two basic approaches
to reasoning about time: one uses "events" and the other "intervals".

I'm beginning to think Gantt charts.

With PERT networks for planning the novel?

(Actually, come to think of it, a project planning tool could check
that you didn't allocate the same "resource" (character) to two
different "tasks" (scenes) at the same time - or that if you did,
it would reschedule them for you ... what a completely *horrible*
idea. Tho' I hate to admit it, I'd find it easier than visually
moving chunks of text around :-) :-) -- I still have an old copy
of Microplanner expert somewhere, now all I need is a working 12
year old 68K Mac and I'll be able to vacuum an entire neighbourhood
of cats!)
