Peter,

Interesting that you mention 100 ms. That's the very number I use for
minimum response time when I designed Sudden View way back in 1989. I
didn't always succeed, but mostly I do. And not just for load but
everything else Sudden View does. I actually discuss that 100 ms
threshold in the introduction.
Faster than 100 ms and the program animates the process. Slower and
each change becomes a discreet event you must wait for. Faster than a
tenth of a second allows for a whole new way of working with text on a
computer screen. When you combine this speed with putting copy, cut,
paste and move under direct mouse control, editing become like
spreading paint on canvas or moving magnetic letters around on your
refrigerator.
Or like the movie "Minority Report" when Tom Cruise's character moves
information around on his display by simply moving his hands in the
air. Sudden View doesn't give you that cool screen, but it DOES allow
you to arrange text in that same fashion. And THAT makes all the
difference.
THAT is what we should be able to do with our thoughts during the draft
process of writing.
THAT is what's required to get the computer (and process) out of the
way so the writer is left with only his thoughts and his work.
THAT is what Sudden View does for the art of editing text.

I know EXACTLY what you mean. And not only to quickly re-read your
content, but to grab it, copy it, move it or change it. Computers
should stay AHEAD of humans. After all, they work for us not the other
way around.
> Any present-day computer *is* slow, but not all are *equally* slow.
It's not the computer...
It's the software.
Sorry for the self-serving ad guys. Sometimes I get carried away.
Pete, give it a try.
Let me know what you think.
