It serves at least one useful purpose: you can tell whether
the cursor that looks like it's at the end of the paragraph
is inside or outside the paragraph (before or after the para
sign); it makes a considerable difference when you start
typing again. But no, it's not nearly so useful as WP's
Reveal Codes, of which no true analogue is possible in Word,
given the way formatting is handled. Still, I learnt to
manage when I had to, and I'm actually reasonably happy with
OO.o.
