PLEASE HELP!!!

I feel I must interrupt your continual
ego dribble on this so called 'poetry'
group to focus on a much more serious
and relevant contemporary issue.
As of this very moment, if you have not
kept up with current affairs in other parts of the
USA, there are perhaps as many as a million people
who have been left homeless in a 24 hour period of
time. Flood waters from levies that have failed are
right this very second rising in homes that are already
under water from the worst hurricane to hit the coastal region
in recent history. There are people stranded in attics and on
rooftops clinging to their lives and waiting for rescue.
Many others have already drowned in their homes or are
floating in the debris or have been washed out into the
ocean. Thousands have been stranded
in the New Orleans superdome for more than two days.
Some have been evacuated from hospitals, others
fled there for sanctuary because they were elderly, sick
or helpless and could not evacuate as others did.
Many that did evacuate are living in hotels throughout the
region spending what little they have on shelter and food
for their families and children. These people cannot return home
because all the roads are flooded, blocked or entry is restricted.
They may not be able to return to their homes for days or weeks.
Some will return to what they considered home only to find
out that it is no longer there or that it has been completely devastated
or flooded beyond reconstruction. There are hundreds, perhaps thousands
who are wandering the streets because their homes are gone
and now they have nowhere to go. They do not have jobs anymore
because the businesses are gone. They have little or no food, water,
clothes or shelter. They spread along the entire coast of Louisiana,
Mississippi and Alabama and further inland.
As many warnings as may have been given, many of these people
had no idea of the devastation or impact a storm of this magnitude
could or did create. It is not their fault. It was simply nature at
its' worst. These are many of the same people that gave to
Hurricane relief in other areas, they gave for Sunami victims,
they gave for 9-11, they gave to help wildfire or earthquake
or tornado or flood victims in other parts of our country.
They need your help and they need your help right now!
Not tomorrow, not next week, although many will continue to need
our assistance for a long time to come.
The Coast Guard, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army
and the local state National Guard in these states have been
working constantly for the past two or three days. Many other
charity organizations and churches have also been helping.
As of yet we have not seen a national military or naval presence in
this area. They are not being evacuated quickly enough. People are
losing their lives and the rescue workers and law enforcement personnel
that are there are overwhelmed and overworked.
Please do anything you can to help. Contact your local politicians
or community organizations and plea with them to send federal
assistance or initiate community campaigns to donate relief.
Right now they need more military helicopters and rescue
personnel to evacuate. They need flat bottom boats to navigate
the treacherous debris littered and flooded streets to rescue
those that live in remote flooded areas or parts of flooded New Orleans
and surrounding parishes. They will soon need fresh water, tents,
food, medical supplies and health care professionals to help them
through the physical and mental pain they are experiencing.
If you have ever been through a major hurricane
you know the fear it can bring even when you felt you were
in a secure location. There are few secure locations in 160 mph
winds, 25 foot ocean surges or 30 foot flood waters.
Please help! Contact your corporate friends, encourage them to donate
immediately. Contact your Hollywood and entertainment friends,
get them to use their fame and fortune clout to relieve these
Americans in need of our immediate assistance.
And on a personal note, donate what you can to relief organizations,
be it a few bucks, blood or your throwaways.
Feel free to copy this message and send it to other newsgroups,
agencies, companies or anywhere else you feel it might help these
people. Please do it immediately. For some it is already too late,
for others there is still hope.
Poetry is humanity first. Think about today and how you can
help make others lives better today. If you do that, tomorrow
will always be brighter.
max
