What a horror show that was.  The coaching of five and six
year olds to testify, the court telling the jury that they
could believe those parts of the child fantasies that
implicated the defendants and ignore the rest.  It makes my
blood boil to think that such an abuse of due process could
still occur in this country.  One child testified about
taking a  ride in a rocket ship.  Perfectly reliable
witness, said the court.

What is strange indeed is that there were few if any consequences for
those police, social workers and prosecutors invovled.

I was only in Bakersfield once, passing through on my way to San
Fransisco. I remember it well . As a Canadian, guns are not normally
part of my life. In a Denny's in Bakersfield, a Deputy Sheriff was at
the counter wearing on his belt the biggest pistol I had ever seen in
an "open" holster (Our police and Mounties wear holsters with buttoned
flaps over the weapon). It was a joy to get out of town... and it
seems I was lucky!

By the way, I referred to Yakima in an eariler post. That should have
been Wenatchee where 43 people were charged. A zealous deputy and
social worker did the "investigation", but the prosecutor and media
(the local paper) helped a lot too.

This madness was not confined to the USA for we in Canada had much the
same. The worst case invovled a day care facility near Saskatoon.
The children involved later admitted that the story was deliberately
made up - a documentary was also fashioned on the case. Here in BC,
a father served several years in jail befoe his daughter admitted her
story was a hoax. Barfly points to the UK as well. In surfin' on
