This doesn't happen all the time. Other files open just fine - no 'x'.
Any idea why this happens or how I fix it? Vista vs XP? Open Office vs MS

They're using Office 2007 wherein M$ courteously once again changed
their document formats so previous editions of Office can't read them.
However, they do provide a converter ("compatibility pack):
