When someone emails a file to me sometimes an 'x' gets added to the file
extension, such that .doc becomes .docx or .ppt becomes .pptx

Simply removing the 'x' does not allow the file to open. (using microsoft
office 2003)

This doesn't happen all the time. Other files open just fine - no 'x'.

Any idea why this happens or how I fix it? Vista vs XP? Open Office vs MS
Offiice?

They're using Office 2007 wherein M$ courteously once again changed
their document formats so previous editions of Office can't read them.

However, they do provide a converter ("compatibility pack):

Ahh, thanks, ELF! I had forgotten about the compatibility "patch".
