That does sound nice. Yes, the security and recreational features are
attractive where my mom lives, though she makes very little use of them.
But 4,000+ residents means more than a few busybodies who love serving on
rules committees and pointing out ever little infraction, and there are more
rules than are sensible. One of her neighbors is always spying on everyone,
making sure no one has a guest who stays too long. Another neighbor has had
her son with her for a few months helping her after she broke her hip, and
this other neighbor is complaining about how long he's been there and
fussing over where he parks his car.
Sounds like Century Village.
A Southern California equivalent. When started in the 1970s, mostly Jewish, now mostly not, but Jews are still a significant minority. I suspect it's not worse than most such places. Unlike in Florida, almost none of the residents have homes elsewhere, so the nosiness and paranoia year-round. I suppose people who obsess about security and value order above all else often move to such places. One of her neighbors really drives my mother nuts, as he's always asking about any visitors she has and where they park (as long as they don't park by a mailbox, they can legally park anywhere). My mother does ESL tutoring, and her students come to her home. Suspicious low-class Latinos driving run-down cars. None of his business, as my mother has told him repeatedly, but he even asks about my sister, who is there often.
