The confusion he shows about Iran and al Qaeda is staggering, but, unfortunately, apparently more common than one would like. First, Iran is 97% Shiite. Al Qaeda is almost solely Sunni and Wahabi based. What McCain said would have been equivalent in the 16th C to saying the Pope supported the Lutheran revolt.

But, as I noted, the mistake is more common than one might think. Lawrence Wright, winner of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction for his book _The Looming Tower_ , stated that he attended congressional hearings not long ago where the representatives of the US intelligence agencies also did not know that little fact.
