On the 3rd? Smart approach. It is horrendously crowded on the 4th, and one has to go at the crack of dawn (or before that) to get a decent position.

Last year we were living in Chicago and went to the fireworks in the park with a million+ other people. It's held on the 3rd. It was amazing and fun, but a little scary when it broke up. Moving that many people out at once was complicated by very little police presence, a fairly high blood alcohol content in a large percentage of the million, and a complete shutdown of all the elevated trains. (Some of the "el" runs underground downtown, but several lines run in a big elevated ... uh, loop.) We didn't know what was going on, other than huge lines had formed and were getting fractious. We hurried down to one of the underground lines and got on a train just before the doors closed. It was packed and people were frantically banging on the doors trying to get in, though I thought people on the train were going to get crushed, it was that crowded. It was quite scary, actually.

Sounds just like the London Underground

This year we weren't there, but it was still eventful: four people were shot during the big exodus, and one of them died. The Trib said gang-related - unusual in the Loop, which is one of the safest police districts in the city.

Yep.... Just like the London Underground....

The other thing we found interesting was the number of private fireworks going on illegally on the 4th. We were living on the south side and drove somewhere to get something, I forget what, but it felt like a full-pitched battle, smoke and all.
