If you navigate over to the snopes.com link, and read all the way down the
page to the final paragraph, you can see that they include some mitigating
language - Check it out for yourself. I tried cutting and pasting and
couldn't get that to work.
And from personal experience -
I've been hit with this three times, and each time Norton has been able to
clean my system, once automatically, and twice with an online cleanup
session.
The first time I got it was entirely my fault - my ISP spamblock caught it,
and like an idiot I opened the damn thing. The other two times I'm not sure
how it arrived.
BUT, this isn't new, it's been around for a year or longer, {not discovered
yesterday, as indicated in Howard's message} and most virus protection
programs know it's there. I can only speak to Norton's effectiveness in
cleaning it up.
AND it DOES NOT destroy the zero sector, whatever that is. It IS malicious,
I won't argue with that. But having survived three go-arounds, I wouldn't
describe it as catastrophically destructive.
I've been receiving those for about 2-3 weeks, now, about one a day.
Since they're from no one *I* know, I've deleted them unread.
I don't open ANYTHING that I don't know about, or whose return address
I don't recognize.
(and in case something does sneak through, like Woodstock, I have
heavy-duty A/V running...)
