What I was getting at is common knowledge, I suppose, that some schools are
superior for students with particular interests in mind.U of C excels in
certain academic areas compared to other Univs.. For Journalism you have
certain top choices, sciences others prevail, business, music, etc. is all
I meant. It is one consideration, obviously, in choosing where to go and
spend the next 4 or so years of your life. Geez, I was just asking.
Annie
It's a good question! I had to change colleges because I wanted to
change majors. (OK, that's not air. I started out at St. John's
College, which doesn't have majors.) I did stick to the classics major
once I got to the next place.
U of C or Dartmouth? The good thing is you can't really go wrong. One
does think of a small school as a disadvantage in research science. No
grad students = hard to get grants, and so on. But primarily undergrad
achools are addressing these problems, last I heard. And they have the
med school at Dartmouth. I think they were the first school that made
every undergrad have a computer.
One factor in my mind would be: is there a chance you'll be be going
to graduate school at a large university? Maybe go for the small
undergrad experience then, because you're not going to get it later. A
friend of mine who is a math professor said she never would have gone
on in math except that she went to a small undergraduate college where
she got a lot of attention. (Not that you can't get a lot of attention
at Chicago. I know people who have been there who felt pretty
nurtured.)
Your kid must be walking on air, Janet! He's going to have so much fun!
