Hee! I thought something along those lines too. Joan and Mique seem
to be choosing their books for monetary value, which is understandable

expect them to function as an investment, so I didn't know how to
answer.

I think I lack the collecting gene. I buy books to read, sometimes keep them, but am totally indifferent to the edition. In fact, I think I'd feel awkward reading something incredibly value like a top quality first edition of a favourite author, and would prefer a copy that wouldn't be spoiled when I shove it in my backpack and wrinkle the pages. And there's no point having a book around I won't enjoy reading (for whatever reason), so the first edition would be out the door, to be replaced by a secondhand copy (or non-first edition). Or lots of them, depending on how much I got for the first edition.

I feel much the same way. I keep many, many books - but don't buy them for the edition, just for the reading pleasure they provide.
